Main Stage

Cork’s finest, the inimitable SULTANS OF PING , will take to the mainstage with the ICO this September! One of the very first bands that sprung to mind when planning the return of music to Semple Stadium, the Cork punk rock legends were finally convinced to join us for 2019 when sent a video of the crowd's reaction to ‘Where’s Me Jumper’, played onstage by DJ Will Leahy during one of the intervals at the festival last year. Every bit as powerful a live force as they were when they played Feile all those years ago, we are delighted to welcome one of the greatest Irish bands ever to Tipp Classical.

Many of last year’s partygoers at Feile Classical will admit that the electrifying sets from THE STUNNING stole many’s the heart in Thurles! They brought an incredible showmanship and exuberance to the stage, and their return to Thurles is set to be a jewel in the crown of Tipp Classical.

An uncompromising and raw Irish act THERAPY? will be returning to Thurles for the first time since 1994! They have served up no fewer than five UK Top 40 singles and their track ‘Shortsharpshock’ sold one million copies worldwide and garnered the fast-rising band a Mercury Music Prize nomination. Their ability to move audiences on mass is one that we can’t wait to see unveiled in Thurles once again.

Iconic frontwoman WENDY JAMES, from 80s pop punk chart toppers (and ‘91 Feile performers!) Transvision Vamp, will also be part of this year’s mainstage show. Wendy enjoyed huge success with Transvision Vamp, singing chart topping alt rock hits including ‘Baby, I Don’t Care’ and ‘I Want Your Love’, and her return to Semple promises to be a special moment for Wendy and an even greater one for this year’s audience.

Jelly Legs was one of the defining albums of 90’s Irish music and with a host of huge singalong hits including ‘July’ and ‘Gin & Tonic Sky’, it is undoubtedly going to be one of the highlights of Tipp Classical when MUNDY, his band, and the entire Irish Chamber Orchestra unveil a series of wonderful arrangements to showcase these classic tracks.

If there were ever a band who summed up the reason for putting loads of people and loads of guitars in a field together in Thurles it would be the THE FRANK AND WALTERS. From the opening chords of ‘After All’ to the last sublime sweep of ‘This Is Not A Song’, every minute of their show at last year’s festival had us convinced that we had to bring them back again in 2019!

Time stood still at last year’s Feile Classical when SOMETHING HAPPENS played their timeless classic ‘Parachute’ backed by the soaring arrangements from the Irish Chamber Orchestra - it was a truly beautiful moment of the festival. Fronted by our festival curator Tom Dunne, they trailblazed their way through their set igniting many’s a Feile Classical fan to sing along in joyful response.

Nineties indie-pop group PICTUREHOUSE exploded onto the scene with their chart-topping hit ‘Sunburst’ - the most played song on Irish radio in 1998! Having dueted with Meatloaf, opened for Bon Jovi and played alongside The Corrs, Texas and legendary rockers The Kinks, this year’s audience will be in for a treat when that ‘Sunburst’ chorus kicks in, backed by the powerful surge of the Irish Chamber Orchestra.

One of the finest bands to grace our Irish stages, THE FAT LADY SINGS are a magnificent new addition to this year’s bill. In the late 80s/early 90s they were headhunted by record labels, praised by critics, admired by peers and adored by fans and they still sound as fresh and exciting as they did when they first formed. Their track ‘Arc Light’ remains one of the classic Irish singles and we’ll be up front and centre when they kick off their set this September in Semple.

The incredible ELEANOR MCEVOY, one of Ireland's most well-known singers, is also joining this year's line-up. Picture her signature tune, the powerful and heartfelt 'Only A Woman's Heart' but performed with the sweep and pomp of the entire Irish Chamber Orchestra! Eleanor has very much followed her own musical path with a huge back catalogue. She is a prolific songwriter and talented multi-instrumentalist who can turn her hand to anything and this performance with the ICO will be very special indeed.

We’ll also have two very special musical performances, A CELEBRATION OF THIN LIZZY’S LIVE AND DANGEROUS and THE MUSIC OF SHANE MACGOWAN, both featuring the Irish Chamber Orchestra and a host of soon-to-be-announced special guests.

All of the artists will be performing alongside the fantastic IRISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA. Having shone brightly from the back rows at Feile Classical in 2018, this year the Orchestra are moving right to the front, playing their own original pieces as well as accompanying the iconic rock bands performing at the festival.

And let’s not forget your festival DJ favourites, MICKY MAC and WILL LEAHY, who will return to the decks again this year, pumping out those classic 90’s hits!

Band leader, showman, hearty starter and all round mischief maker, Jerry Fish returns to Thurles having played the main stage last year with the reunited An Emotional Fish. This year he will curate the The Tipp Top with a selection of classic bands and a bunch of weird and wonderful entertainers, bringing forth all of the mayhem which has made him a festival favourite right across Europe.

Conversations On Music & Sport will return for 2019. Like many’s the pre-match tactic this year’s squad of speakers won’t be revealed until much closer to the date. But we can reveal that Dustin the Turkey will be back to wreak havoc on the Tribal Talks, the main stage and the town of Thurles!
